World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world’s waterways celebrated on the fourth Sunday of every September. It highlights the many values of our rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of all rivers around the world. Rivers in virtually every country face an array of threats, and only through our active involvement can we ensure their health in the years ahead.
Here in New Hanover County, we will be celebrating our incredible, irreplacable Cape Fear River!
Join us on Sunday, September 28th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a free guided hike and litter cleanup, in partnership with Friends of Pleasure Island State Parks, at Carolina Beach State Park. Enjoy an easy, scenic hike overlooking the river along the 3 mile Sugarloaf Trail. Ranger Jesse will walk us through the natural history of the Cape Fear River, we will also share how Cape Fear River Watch is working to protect the river, for all people to explore for World Rivers Days to come. Along the way, we will pick up any litter seen along or around the trailhead to each do our small but essential part in protecting our river.
We will meet at the marina at Carolina Beach State Park. We will provide the pickers, bags and buckets, and gloves for the cleanup. Dress appropriately for the weather, apply sunscreen and bug spray, and bring plenty of water. We will have a limited number of binoculars available on a first-arrive basis.
This is a free event for all ages. To help sustain the work of Cape Fear River Watch and Friends of Pleasure Island State Parks, donations are appreciated. Add a donation to Cape Fear River Watch during your registration, and click here to donate to Friends of Pleasure Island State Parks. Donations will also be accepted day-of.
We hope to see you out there!
