Partnership With Vigilant Hope:
Cape Fear River Watch is excited to partner with Keep New Hanover Beautiful and Vigilant Hope for our October Second Saturday Cleanup! Vigilant Hope is a local non-profit that works closely with the houseless and underprivileged here in Wilmington. As most of you know, our cleanups often intersect with this community. Here at Cape Fear River Watch, we always strive to be respectful of our fellow community members. Vigilant Hope has agreed to speak with our cleanup crew and share their knowledge with the experience of being houseless in Wilmington. Part of their work involves improving the material conditions of the houseless by providing them with certain necessities of life that many of us take for granted. We ask that if you are attending the event and have the means, please bring at item to donate. Some current needs include men's deodorant, shaving razors, wet wipes, and bug spray. You can find a more complete list here: https://vigilanthope.com/donation-needs. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out at rob@cfrw.us.
Location:
As for the cleanup we will be cleaning up Greenfield Lake again! This time we will be focusing our efforts on the northern finger of the lake at the intersection of East Lake Shore Drive and Lake Branch Drive. The litter tends to accumulate in this portion of the lake. Like last month we will have the option to clean up via watercraft. I will have limited capacity with the amount of kayaks I am able to bring. If you have our own and the means to transport it please do so! Due to the collaboration with Vigilant Hope the cleanup will start earlier than usual at 8:30am. You can find parking along the street. A hard address you can use to get you to the location is 1626 Lake Branch Dr, Wilmington, NC 28401.
What to Bring
CFRW will provide pickers, gloves, safety vests, bags, and bug spray. If you have waterproof boots those are recommended for the shore banks. Don't forget to bring your water and sunscreen.
Covid Safety
Since Covid cases are on the rise we will be trying to implement practices that allow for social distancing. Please keep this in mind when attending the event and do your best to respect others around you. Since this is an outdoor event and we will be able to practice social distancing, masks are not required. We do recommend that you bring yours so you have the ability to wear one if needed. We hope to see you there!
